Does read disc, (What's this?) I bought this dvd rom last December. It worked for the first couple of weeks. Then it just stop reading any discs any more( blank disc, CD, burn cd). I've tried everything I know: Reinstall the drive, fireware, unplug and plug it back in. None worked. I am very disappointment with this dvd rom.
Constant problems., (What's this?) Nothing but read errors, system hiccups, even boot problems. Not booting from the drive but booting in general. So bad it caused issues with motherboard and prevented HD boot. Swapped it into a couple other systems and moved in other DVD drives so I know its this unit, nothing else.
Died completely after a few months. When it did work it was slow. Never made much noise though.
For brand name should expect better, but for the money I shouldn't be surprised.

Not fantastic, (What's this?) I purchased the GH24NS50 with great hopes. Unfortunately it died after about 6 months of use. It no longer reads disks. I'm disgruntled.
Great option and affordable, (What's this?) The DVD writer worked as it should. Very fast burning, and worked correctly with Sony DVDs. The construction is good. The softwares that comes with it are interesting, but not very different from what you get from some freewares available.

Some have these speeds, but they aren't consistent or the buffer underrun is very weak and it can't handle the data its transmitting if it loses speed. This can artificially increase the time taken to burn a dvd.

Sony CRX220A1 52x24x52 Internal IDE CD-RW Drive

Problems with CRX220A1 SONY, I bought the device just 3 days ago and still trying to make it work. I used Roxio easy CD Creator Platinum for burning, and everything is ok but that the writer do not create the copy. Well it does but there is no cd player that recognizes the music not even the data recorded on the cd with the writer. Anybody can help? ithaku@hotmail.

I installed this cd-rw in no time at all into my 3 year old HP, while I was in there I upped the RAM, and we were off and running!!! (as predicted--removing the case cover from the tower was harder than the install)

The Burner: YES, the software NOOOO!, I bought this burner in march 2003 and I'm still trying to guess how to format a CD-RW, without my computer crashing....
I don't know if the original "CD Creator" or "Nero" recognise the driver but if they do, I'll recommend you to use them instead of the B's Recorder software that comes with the burner.

This burner performs quietly and flawlessly. Even in critical operations (disc to disc on the fly with multiple applications running in the background) it didn't fail me once. Just make sure you assign it a DMA and use quality media, as this sucker spins at over 9000 rpm.
What? Windows XP won't install this thing?, I bought this drive, and had no problems until B's CD burner tried to re-configure the thing as some kinda imaging drive. After that, I had Windows XP try to re-install the drive, but it seems to think that it's the CRX220E1 model and not the CRX220A1 model. Needless to say, the drive won't burn a single thing. There's no online support or driver downloads ANYWHERE. Not even Sony.com. Now I have to go and search for the original installation CD to see if that works. Bottom line is, this thing is great so long as you keep the original softward CD.

The installation was pretty easy. The software - B's Clip and B's Recorder took some getting used to but worked fine once I got the hang of it. I went to the Sony homepage and downloaded the latest revisions to the software - The site had good instructions and the update went smooth.
I burned a couple of music CD's then saved some files on a data CD. I'm very happy with this burner. Make sure you buy high speed blank CD's because this recorder is very fast.

this burner is a headache, In over a year I have not been successful in getting the Sony CRX220A1 to function consistently or properly. B's software (used with this device) is so complex that anyone who does not spend most of their free time playing with these kind of devices has no chance.

maybe someone can help me..., I bought this item on e-bay and it works just fine, but for some reason I can only burn 2 CDs per day at the fastest speed available on this drive. Beware of defective drx-510ul, I become one of those unfortunate customers to get a defective drx-510ul drive.I am a amateur photographer and wanted a dvd writer for backup of my digital images that run over a 18 GB bow. Bought the drive two months ago used it to burn over 15 dvds, like twice a month couple of dvds. And one fine day the burn process stopped. I tried installing all the latest updates of Record Now, My DVD software the firmware etc. I read somewhere that drx-510ul has the same internal drive as the DRU-510A. Apparently lot users who bought that also have same problem Hope this helps with your buying decision. If you buy test extensivly during the first 30 days or the return period.Pros: Fastes drive Yet. After doing extensive research, I made the decision to purchase Sony's DRX-510UL external DVD drive. I had two primary needs: 1.) The ability to backup large amounts of personal computer data; 2.) The ability to make backups of my DVD movie library using "DVD X Copy Platinum" software for Windows from 321 Studios (highly recommended -- and available on Amazon.com -- as the included software does not make such backups). On all counts, I made the right decision to buy this particular burner. Sony delivers a superior product: It stays cool during operations; the unit is sturdy; every disc I've created has worked (no coasters after making over 60 discs to date); and it operates quietly, too. I use Memorex's DVD+R and DVD+RW blank media; I've also used TDK's Armor Plated DVD media successfully, too. (They cost double what other blank DVD media costs, but yield 100 times greater resistance to dirt and scratches, plus repel dust. It's worth the investment, esp. if you have family or friends that must touch/use the DVDs themselves... and tend to scratch them.) While this drive can burn/read DVD-R, I haven't used this format and cannot comment. To consider, too: The 8x DVD burners are becoming available as of this writing. While those new 8x units are faster, bear in mind the price of the 8x media, plus the new-ness of the software drivers.
Great DVD Burner + Outstanding service, I've had my Sony DRX510UL for slightly over a year now and have burned in the neighborhood of 500 discs with the only failures being my own fault. I will point out that about 2 months after I purchased my burner, it ceased working and I quickly obtained a RMA (return merchandise authorization) from Sony and returned it for service. To my great surprise, it was back in my hands, fully repaired and working perfectly, in less than 8 days which for any electronic repair job is 'warp' speed.

LaCie d2 Blu-Ray 12x USB 2.0 and FireWire Drive 301906U

Just Works, (What's this?) I have the unit connected via FW400 to a Mac Pro 1st Gen machine. The unit burns blu-ray including LTH disks with no problems observed whatsoever. The unit has a Pioneer BDR-206 drive inside it. The only problems I have with it is it's high price and that it lacks FW800 capability.
GROSSLY OVERPRICED!, This is a good product that works as advertised. The BIG problem I have with this product is the PRICE! LaCie is selling a $110 Pioneer BDR 206 drive installed in a standard LaCie USB 2.0/Firewire 400 enclosure for $380! That means you are paying $270 JUST for their enclosure! Why do they think this pricing is acceptable?

LaCie makes wonderful external drive enclosures that look good and work very well. So why only one star? Because of the outrageous price markup! LaCie does not make any Blu-ray or DVD drives themselves. In the case of this product all they make is an external USB/Firewire 400 enclosure, then they drop in a Pioneer BDR 206 internal SATA drive, and JACK UP the price!

You can accomplish the same thing by buying the Pioneer BDR drive separately for $110:

Plug and Play- Awesome!, (What's this?) I never take the time to review the stuff I get. This however, has been great. I literally plugged it in to my MacBook Pro ( I did have Toast Titanium already installed) and started burning Blu-Ray disks. It's relatively fast, and so far all discs have played. I have used it to burn Blu-Ray discs as well as burn and copy SD DVD's. I've used it via fire-wire and USB with little difference in speed. It is expensive, but If you need a Blu-Ray burner for a Mac- it's great. I have an HD video camera and was tired of viewing lower quality SD video. No you can't watch Blu-Ray's on it - that's not what it was intended for.

High Quality Burner, I had been looking for a high quality Blu-Ray burner for a while and found this LaCie drive. I have had it for two weeks and have found it to be rock solid...just what I need. This drive is a bit pricy but I am finding it well worth it.
Cannot play Blu-ray movies on Mac Platform (as of Aug 2010), (What's this?) Bought the drive to watch my Blu-ray movies on my new 27" iMac. No Blu-ray movie player exists in the Macintosh operating system so you can only use the drive for this purpose if you install Windows and get a Windows OS compatible blu-ray player. I requested it be returned. The supplier consented, paid for the return shipping, and refunded the entire sum of my puchase. Wonderful experiance.
Works Great, (What's this?) I am very happy with this drive. It's faster at burning normal DVDs than the internal drive in my iMac. The bundled Roxio software is an ok burning program which has worked well on my iMac creating Blu-ray discs, it's just a little limited for me. I usually use DVD Studio Pro which has a lot more customization, but no Blu-ray support. I would recommend this drive it has work flawlessly, easy setup.

Sony Optiarc 8X SATA DVD+/-RW Slim Drive without Software AD-7700S-01 - Bulk

Excellent thin drive, (What's this?) Wonderful small DVD/CD drive. A thin drive was required by my choice of case, and this drive has worked well for almost a year.
OSX compatible, (What's this?) Great sli-line drive that is Mac OSX compatible. This works great in a franken mac. Many drives will constantly spin up when running under OSX. The Sony drive is one of only a couple that don't have this problem.

Recommended for any franken mac needs.

Great drive, (What's this?) BlueRay! Light scribe! Whats not to like. Works great. Better than my Panasonic home theater Blue Ray player.
Awesome Blu player, (What's this?) For a straight forward Bluray/HD-DVD/DVD player in a HTPC you cannot go wrong with this. Coupled with the Asus Xonar HDAV1.3 Slim card, your blu experience will be VERY rewarding! No problems with HDCP playback with this drive... playback of even BD+ is a snap.

Good Blu Ray Drive., It works just like I need it work. It was cheap and works as expected. Not much more for me to say with the other reviews. There are no complaints here.
LG HDDVD player with no HDDVD video codex, I like the product, however, there was not any HDDVD codex to play the HDDVD movies that I have. That was very lame, because I had to go and buy extra software which should have been unnecessary considering the player can play all three formats, DVD, HDDVD, and Blu-ray. I firmly believed that the software would be included for all three formats.

It is a good player though.
Great combo drive, This is the second drive I have gotten and have been very happy with it. The included software allows playback of both HDDVD and Blu-ray disks. The firmware update is simple with the application disk on-line. I don't think this drive will be available for long.
Nice Drive, (What's this?) I bought this drive for a HTPC. It works well and installed with no problems.

On the down side, the activity light can be distracting. At least it's blue as it reminds me which drive is the blueray drive. ;-)

It doesn't always read at 6x- sometimes it starts out at 3x and works it's way up.
It's Blu-Ray and HD DVD, together at last!, Good Things:
1) It reads Blu-Ray and HD DVD discs. Great for a home theater or do-everything PC. HD DVD capability will be attractive to cheapskates who can buy HD movies for a fraction of the cost of Blu-Ray.
2) It does the usual stuff you'd expect, reading and writing DVD (single and dual layer) and CDROM. It rips audio CDs just fine too.
3) It claims to support Lightscribe discs, but I've never tested that. Sharpie markers are cheaper and faster.
